Grave Cove
Grave Cove at the top of West Island is not a very safe anchorage as the name implies. Just round the corner is the equally worryingly named Death Cove. Bertha
Bertha's Beach is near East Cove and was named after the sailing ship Bertha which was wrecked there. Parts of the ship and her cargo of timber can still be seen sticking out of the sand, as the timber and spikes above. The Captain of the Bertha returned to the UK and found the backing for another vessel. After rounding Cape Horn this ship was also wrecked and a total loss, he is reputed to have committed suicide by hanging himself.
